What is Setting the Bar?
Hello and welcome! I’m Shane Trotter—father, husband, writer, educator, Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, and author of the recently released book, Setting the Bar: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Era of Distraction, Dependency, and Entitlement. A review here.
My time in education has led me to the not-so-novel conclusion that the norms of our world are setting children and parents up for failure. It takes a village to raise a child, or so the saying goes. But our villages and village norms have witnessed a rapid deterioration over the past decades.
Amid an environment littered with hyper-addictive stimuli, brilliant marketer manipulation, and hollow materialism, schools have failed to be the authority in human development that parents desperately need—the community pillar that stands against human devolution and dedicates itself to the promotion of human flourishing.
Setting the Bar is my attempt to help. Make no mistake, there are certain practices, studies, and foundational principles that every parent would want to know. Setting the Bar is a place to explore the tools, skills, and dispositions that matter, and to give parents the information they need to help kids thrive in a novel world!
